Functional Maths is an approach to teaching maths that helps people to gain the most out of life, learning and work. If you would like to enrol onto the course please scan the QR code and book a slot for an initial assessment.

Joining a Functional Maths class will give you the opportunity to improve your maths skills and to use these skills for practical problem solving. It will build your confidence in how to use maths in all aspects of your everyday life.

 

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements to access this course.

All prospective learners will need to complete an initial assessment. The assessment will give us an indication of your current level and learning needs. This will ensure that you are enrolled onto the correct level of Functional Skills. On completion we will either offer you a place on the course or discuss your options.

Students must be aged 19+ from the 31st of August 2023.

Who is the course aimed at?

This course is ideal for anyone looking to improve their everyday maths skills or to gain a Functional Skills qualification.

What will I study?

  • Handling large numbers and calculation skills – for when there’s no calculator to hand
  • Calculating using fractions, percentages and decimals – to help you handle money
  • Measuring perimeters and areas, working out sizes of objects or spaces – for all those DIY and gardening jobs
  • Reading and interpreting tables, graphs, charts and other numerical data – to ensure you do not get misled by statistics
  • Calculating simple probability
  • How to use a calculator and to check your answers.

You will get the chance to apply these maths skills in a wide variety of situations and will gain experience in using maths when making decisions and explaining the reasons behind these decisions.

How will I be assessed?

At the start of the course you will be assessed to find out what you need to learn. You will then agree an individual learning plan appropriate to your situation and needs.

You will be assessed informally throughout the course to check on your progress.

Qualifications are obtained by completing a written exam.

Duration

2 hours per week for approximately 38 weeks

Gaining Functional Maths will help you in any future course of study that you may be considering. For individuals wishing to move into Higher Education, Level 2 is accepted for entry to a range of courses (check with the course providers for information on specific courses).

Employers consider Functional Skills to be essential in the workplace so achievement of a qualification will give you an advantage in the job market.
